tefl / tesol / celta

do i really need a tefl certificate?

A TEFL certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) has become a necessary qualification for all teachers who wish to teach English as a foreign language. Whether you are a first-time teacher or an experienced teacher in other subjects, the TEFL certificate will provide you with the necessary skills to manage a productive classroom.

What is the difference between TEFL and TESOL?

TEFL refers to Teaching English as a Foreign Language: programs in countries where English is not the primary language and is not a lingua franca. TESOL, which stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, is a general name for the field of teaching that includes both TESL and TEFL

Is TEFL equivalent CELTA?

CELTA is a specific brand of TEFL certification that is awarded by the University of Cambridge’s non-profit assessment organization, Cambridge English Assessment. The course is offered by a variety of different schools and educational institutions around the globe. It is the equivalent of a 4-week, intensive 120-hour TEFL certification.

The more people you have, the bigger the job market and no country has more people than China. When it comes to teaching English, China has a bigger market and more jobs than pretty much anywhere else.

There are plenty of reasons people choose to teach in China:

  • A great place to learn Mandarin
  • An incredibly varied and beautiful country to travel
  • A culture completely different to western cultures
  • Plenty of teaching positions
China is very different, the things you would put up with while travelling can be more frustrating when you’re actually living there. The big five for most people tend to be racism, Chinese firewall, language barrier, pollution & hygiene.
China is a big country and some of its rules can fluctuate from city to city and province to province.

For a Z visa (foreign expert certificate):

  1. You need to be a native English speaker from the USA, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand or Canada.
  2. You need to have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline.
  3. You often need TEFL certification.
  4. Criminal health check.
  5. Clean health check.
  6. 25-55 years old.
  7. Have 2 years post grad work experience.
If you want to work in China and get paid, you will need a Work Visa(Z Visa). It’s important that the company you are planning to work with is able to employ foreign workers and you need to meet certain requirements that qualify you as an expert in your field of work. Most often foreigners employed in China teach English which is why many universities and schools are accredited to employ foreign employees
The average salary for teaching English in China is between 8,000 – 20,000 RMB per month ($1,200 to $3,100). The top end of that – 16,000 to 20,000RMB, was typically from private language schools in large cities. In general, location makes the biggest difference in salary. The larger tier 1 cities, like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou offered the top end salaries and smaller tier 2 & 3 cities offered the lower ends of the salary band.
